Bulleit Bourbon Frontier Whiskey | Rating 44

Bourbon Reviews

Since I had never heard of it and the bottle looks like something right out of the 19th century, I had to try it. Apparently invented by Augustus Bulleit, so it’s got that going for it, which is nice. However, it seems this particular brand has been around only since 1987. And I think the proof is in the taste. I know I don’t have to qualify this every time, but it doesn’t taste “bad.” It just has a distinct hint of dust or something…perhaps what frontier bourbon might have actually tasted like. At $20 I have to give this one a thumbs down for taste, but a thumbs up for authenticity. Of course, that is only one man’s opinion. This whiskey won the gold medal at the 2004 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, so it obviously tickles the palate for some people (i.e. whiny commenters). Maybe worth a shot for you, pun intended. Thank you thank you I will be here all week. I will still savor every last drop until the next bottle finds its way into my liquor cabinet.
FYI: 90 Proof. Just like on the frontier.

Update: In response to numerous comments, I have a removed an editing error that referred to “gays” (which had nothing to do with sexual preference, but that’s for a whole different post) and replaced it with a better example. I suggest you collect your hurt feelings and try not to take life so seriously. Your bourbon will taste better, even this shitty one, and you may wake up tomorrow and find a reason to contribute to this world instead of bitching about why it’s so unfair to you. Thank you, commenters who don’t suck (figuratively speaking, to be clear). Cheers.

Marcus: Thanks for the email and the link to this post.

I haven’t had Bulleit in quite some time and I am certainly not qualified to review bourbon.

I do remember it being better than I thought for a $20 bottle of bourbon. I’ve even bought it instead of Knob Creek before.

And I didn’t know that gays drank bourbon. Doesn’t seem colorful enough. /end bad jokes.

Now you’re making me want to pick up a bottle and give it another try so I can write a more intelligent comment.

Keep up the reviews. I added a link to your site on mine under my post “Top 5 manly drinks”. It fit in perfectly with the article.

    Have a great weekend.

It’s got an unusually high rye content, which might account for some aspect of it’s unique flavor.

Bulleit is a good bourbon and at $20 a bottle its a steal.

But then again I live in Oakland, California so maybe all that “gay” air is wafting across the bay and affecting my palate. Marcus, you’re a moron.

It is great to read a non-biased intelligent homophobic review of Bourbon. You’re an idiot. Have fun with the site Boys of Bourbon (nothing gay about that name).

I just tried Bulleit Bourbon for the first time. It was a Christmas present. Due to the high rye content it has a much sharper taste than the much smoother Makers Mark. As a result, even though it is an award winning Bourbon, I would only use it in mixed drinks. In other words, it’s too harsh.

Hi Marcus. It’s a shame you find a need to ruin your reviews with homophobic comments. Why was that necessary? Had nothing to do with the quality of the bourbon. Love to see good bourbon reviews, but obviously you’ve got a problem.

Wow, this is the first time I have ever read a really bad review of Bulliet. It is one of my everyday drinkers along with Elijah Craig 12. Bourbon is my favorite whiskey and I have a fair amount of it most of which is more expensive then the Bulliet. That being said it is neither bad nor cheap Whiskey. I have introduced many people to it and have few that did not think it is good. And more then handful have made it their everyday drinker. While it doesn’t have the bite of Bakers, the smoothness of Van Winkle Special Reserve (my favorite Whiskey, I like it better the 20 yr) or the complexity of Four Roses Single Barrel (BTW Bulliet is made by Four Roses for Diageo. That being said it is a quality product and a very good Whiskey. I do not find it rough, in fact it is a favorite of many of my friends who have just started drinking Bourbon. A brief FYI about me, I am in my mid 40’s, my favorite hard Achol is Bourbon followed closely by Irish Whiskey and Single Malt Scotch. I drink all Whisky/Whiskey straight up or on the Rocks and unless I am drinking a Barrel proof whiskey (i.e. George t Stagg, W.L. Weller Special Reserve), then I also add water. I don’t buy Whiskey to make mixed drinks. I also love Belgium Ales, Irish Stouts and Porters, Yuengling Lager and most of what Victory and Dogfish Head brew. .

I have been drinking Bulleit Bourbon for about twenty three years now and it ALWAYS satisfies the taste buds. A highly under-rated (by some) but quality consistent Bourbon, it has a slight peppery nip to it with NO after taste. It is not sweet like some of the girliemen prefer… and it does have that 90 proof boot to it that lessors won’t be able to handle. But, give me a nice healthy shot of Bulleit and maybe an ice cold Yuengling and I will not make trouble for them. Dusty taste? My friend… you are NOT supposed to suck the cork dry… :)

This is a sad review for such a great tasting bourbon…dusty???? WTF? I like Bulleit and for the cost will make it an everyday type of bourbon. I like the rye and feel it has a sweetness over brands in my bar. Dont let this review make you not try it. Others agree as well as most reviews, for the $ Bulleit devlivers!

Bulleit is a regular for me. As a bourbon drinker I often look for that $20-30 range to keep on hand. Stepping up to Woodford, 1792 or Blanton’s on occasion. That being said, Bulleit and Buffalo Trace are can’t miss bourbons for the price. I’m not going to insult the reviewer here but “dusty” was a way for him to tie in his review to the old west look and feel of this bourbon. It most certainly does not taste dusty. That’s just a silly comment. Anyhow, try it. You will like it as most have pointed out above this entry.

I’m a BIG fan of Makers Mark and drink if often – even using it in Manhattan and Old Fashions. However, after a tip from a fellow liquor store patron, he suggested using Bulleit for Manhattans because most drink recipes for Manhattans call for rye. Since Bulleit does contains some rye (not sure of the %), I gave it try and really liked it! So…give it a try in Manhattans. I don’t suggest drinking it straight up or even on the rocks. Save the straight-up drinking to Makers Mark.

I really disliked this one, especially at its price point. Until I tried it with a spicy meal. For some reason, that made it taste AWESOME.

I don’t know if I’ll buy it again, but it rocks with spicy food. I can’t wait to try it with some slow-roasted pork BBQ with extra-spicy rub and sauce!
